Inclusion Through Fluency of Language
"If given the opportunity, breaking the language barriers between Spanish emergent speakers learning English will happen in a flash. Our organization is focused on closing the gap on language inadequacies and creating a space for all to excel and thrive at school and at home."

WHO AM I?
My name is Katelyn Cambeiro. I am an upcoming junior and I am working hard to make a difference.
I have devoted my time at being a leader in my community and school. I have been voted by my fellow classmates to become the vice-president of the Spanish Honor Society and I was chosen to be a student ambassador at my school by welcoming new students and helping them problem solve throughout their first year high school experience.
FAMILY
I was inspired by my abuelo who always encouraged me and my siblings to do better and be better. Nothing comes easy in this life, but with an education you have opportunities at your fingertips. As my abuelos immigrated from Cuba while Castro was in power,
a vast decision was made to leave it all behind and start new in the United States. As my abuelos' story has fascinated me with the obstacles and triumphs they endured, I learned that the common denominator was understanding and speaking the English language.
HOW IT STARTED
During Covid, my siblings and I along with friends, the community, and students from our high school, created thousands of flashcards for lower income schools in the Las Vegas valley. These flashcards were used for students in lower economic elementary schools who needed supplementary materials to give them the extra push they needed to be successful at school. These cards helped predominately Spanish speaking students speak English more proficiently.
THEN....
I realized that writing these flashcards by hand became very time consuming and it was not efficient. That is when I decided to scale the delivery of the flashcards by creating an app that would reach more schools, teachers, and most importantly students. LEARNING ENGLISH IN A FLASH (LEAF). is an app that is available to all students at school and at home. The app does the following:
* The app uses videos of middle and high school students speaking words in Spanish and English to form an interactive environment for students learning English.
*Enhances Spanish and English words by categories (colors, farm animals, household items etc.)
* The app is a visual and audio tool that allows a student to not only see the picture of the word, but hear the word as well.
* The app targets students in kindergarten through third grade.
* LEAF is supported by many media platforms (Apple and Android) that will allow schools and teachers to have easy access for download capabilities when they need it.
*The app is FREE!!!!
THE MISSION
Our mission is to ensure that all students, regardless of income, have access to a quality Spanish to English learning experience. To achieve this, we have developed an app to help lower-income schools learn Spanish to English. We started with handwritten flashcards and are now leveraging technology to reach more students more efficiently. It is my vision to keep expanding the app with more information and reach more grades. Keeping the app free and available to everyone is key to its success and allows any student to use it.
